Transnet puts safety first

WITH THE aim of improving safety conditions in the workplace, Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) in conjunction with the Abaqulusi Municipality held a rail incident simulation exercise.
The simulation was held on Wednesday, November 12 at TFR’s Vryheid East depot. During the exercise a real-life disaster was staged wherein various role players were required to demonstrate how they would respond in case of a real life emergency.
The exercise was conducted in compliance with one of the Railway Safety Regulator’s requirements, which stipulates that an exercise of this nature is held annually by railway operators to ensure the vigilance and readiness of all participants
in providing relief during a disaster.
The stakeholders that were involved in the exercise were South African Police Service, the Abaqulusi Municipality and COGTA (Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs).
This simulation was the first to be conducted in this area, not only as compliance issue but also as a platform TFR uses to identify gaps in its disaster management plans, learning from it and continuously improving in process.
Safety remains a priority to TFR and projects of this nature are regularly conducted in the company throughout the country.
The organisers would like to thank all staff members as well as other stakeholders who took part in the simulation for responding well to the “emergency” at hand and for showing their readiness for future incidents.transnet4webtransnet5webtransnet6 transnet2webtransnet3web
