THERE’S an old saying about giving a man a fish… he’ll eat for a day, but teach him how to fish and he’ll feed himself for a lifetime.

With this profound proverb in mind, AfriForum and Helpende Hand have made it their mission to give back to the community by establishing a community centre in Vryheid, the aim of which will be to empower those who are keen to further themselves, but need a helping hand to do so.

At a meeting of committee members last Thursday, they took their first step towards assisting a student in obtaining a sponsorship, by starting a fund for their future education. This, according to AfriForum committee member and Vice Chairperson of Helpende Hand, Albina Janse van Rensburg, will be the fourth sponsorship of its kind, with Helpende Hand already having assisted three local students in this regard.

The community centre itself, which is still in the process of being renovated, is a work in progress, but donations of clothing and furniture are already pouring in. The committee thanks the public for their support and urges the community to get involved in this uplifting project, which looks set to create employment and empowerment opportunities for those who are willing to take the first step towards empowering themselves.

The centre will be open to members of AfriForum, Helpende Hand and Solidariteit, but will also include a secondhand shop that will be open to the public, where community members can donate their unwanted goods or pick up some great bargains in support of the centre.

If you would like to assist in this regard, contact Delarese Weiss or Albina Janse van Rensburg. The centre will officially open on May 2, but a special gathering will be held at the Klipkerk on May 31 to celebrate the launch and opening of the community centre.

Special guests who will be attending the launch on May 31 will include Gerrie Nel, Flip Buys, Kallie Kriel, Riaan du Plooy and Ian Cameron.

Albina went on to thank Delarese for all of the hard work she has put into the project.
