A busy week at Vryheid High

u/15 Boys Sevens Rugby Team was victorious.

THE week that has passed has been jam-packed with activities of all kinds. We donated food to those in need, we awarded academic accolades to our grade 8’s and we kept warm by running around on the sport fields.

Inkanyiso School was in dire need of food and our Interact learners took the initiative to help out. They organised a successful food collection at the school where, not only did VHS students donate a significant amount of food, but TFS and Quick Check also contributed generously. We would like to thank Quick Check and TFS for their donations, as well as those donors who chose to remain anonymous.

Our top ten grade 8 academic achievers were awarded their pins. The results were calculated based on the learners’ June Exam results. Congratulations to the following learners, listed in alphabetical order:

T Akhtaruzzaman, R Ameen, K Gevers, B Hellberg, B Kathrada, L Mattison, A Pillay, J Schnackenberg, T Tshabalala, and E Varghese.

Our cricket boys also had a busy week playing mid-week matches as well as in a tournament over the weekend. Our first team played against Pionier Hoërskool on Wednesday. We batted first and posted a fantastic total of 191/4 in 20 overs.

Our best batsmen were A Vorster with 78 and C High with 42. Our leading wicket takers were C High (2) and R Niebuhr (3). VHS won the match by a 100 runs.

Our second team travelled to Newcastle on Wednesday with the following results: we batted first and posted 131 in a shortened 15 over game. Leading run scorer was J Forster with 36. We bowled Newcastle High’s 1st team out for 94. Vryheid High School won the match by 37 runs. An excellent show from both sides.

The boys then travelled to Pongola for a festival held at Pongola Academy. The 2nd team did exceptionally well and won 2 out of 3 games. The most notable performance was that of Tristen Aitken scoring a very good 100 in one of the encounters.

The 1st team won all their matches capping off a very successful week for the side. They unofficially won the festival with some very good performances. The most notable was Keegan Meier. Keegan scored 245 runs on the weekend.

The girls cricket team traveled to Newcastle over the weekend to play at Ferrum High School. Both teams showed exceptional improvement and we are keeping our eyes on both the Aloe and Viper teams. The VHS Aloes won 3 of their 4 matches, a praise-worthy show.

The sevens rugby teams traveled to Glenwood on Friday, where our first team made it all the way to the semi-final round and our u/15 boys return victorious as they won the bowl. An amazing achievement for the boys in green.

Congratulations to all learners on their achievements. As always, we would like to thank parents and coaches for accompanying our learners and helping us nurture them into well rounded individuals.
