THE Nigerian government may be left to retreat with their tail between their legs following adamant accusations that police in Vryheid tortured and killed a Nigerian man in his home.

According to a report by CAJ News Africa many such stories arose months after quarrels between the South African and Nigerian governments after Nigerian properties were burned down during protests against drug smuggling and sex slavery in the Johannesburg area.

The report quotes police spokesperson, Brig. Vishnu Naidoo, saying that he still stands behind the version of the story that was brought forward by the Ulundi police who conducted the raid on the day of Kingsley Ikeri’s death.

“As police were conducting a search in the house where the suspect was, he swallowed some powder suspected to be drugs, fell dizzy and was declared dead upon arrival at the local hospital,” said Brig. Naidoo, in the article published by CAJ News Africa.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) spokesman, Moses Dlamini, also confirmed that the police had not been found at fault as a post-mortem showed a presence of something believed to be drugs in Kingsley Ikeri’s stomach.

Furthermore, Mr Dlamini said that there were no injuries or anything visible to suggest that Mr Ikeri was assaulted, tortured or suffocated.
