VIDEO: Praying for Lara and Amy

Tuesday morning was an emotional one for learners of Pioneer and Vryheid High.

Tuesday morning was an emotional one for the hockey girls’ first teams from Pioneer and Vryheid High Schools.

United by their love for the sport, the hockey girls from Vryheid High reached out in sympathy and prayer to the hockey girls from Pioneer, following the tragedy that has befallen the captain of the Pioneer team, Lara Dedekind.

On September 28, Lara, also the deputy head girl of Pioneer High School, wafted into her fairytale themed matric farewell looking like a princess.

The next week, her life took a tragic turn, when Lara and her younger sister Amy were involved in a tragic collision in the Louwsberg area.

The vehicle they were travelling in collided with the back of a stationary truck in misty conditions.

Both girls were rushed to hospital in critical condition.

Vryheid High’s hockey girls extended their sympathy by taking roses, candles and helium-filled balloons to Pioneer on Tuesday.

Each of Pioneer’s hockey girls received a single red rose as a token of solidarity during this trying time, and personal prayers written by the girls were attached to the helium balloons. After a brief prayer and few words of encouragement from DA councillor and close friend to the Dedekind family, Alta de Kock, the balloons were released, carrying the prayers to heaven.
