Mayor falls victim to stock theft

ABAQULUSI mayor, Jerry Sibiya, warns farmers to be vigilant, after falling victim to stock theft, himself, over the festive period.

According to Cllr Sibiya, the thieves were attempting to smuggle seven of his cattle, and four cows belonging to another Vryheid farmer, across the Swaziland border, when they were spotted by observant members of the community.

“Members of the community spotted cattle they did not recognise in the forests in that area and reported to the police. The police were able to recover the cattle and arrested two of the men believed to be responsible for the theft, but the third managed to get away,” he said.

“I really appreciate what the community has done to stop crime. They didn’t know that the cattle were from Vryheid. They just observed suspicious behaviour and reported to the police. They are a great example of what it means to be a responsible citizen. If you identify a problem, you should play a role in solving that problem. I also appreciate the police for responding so quickly.”

Cllr Sibiya went on to say that he found the rate at which farmers were being attacked in the area, alarming.

“The country needs to protect its farmers,” he concluded. “If we have no one to farm because of the risks that farmers face, the country will die. Food will become too expensive and all those that are employed by farmers will be joining the ranks of the unemployed. We are all South Africans. We need to protect each other, as well as the people who are putting food on our tables.”
