Part 3: Karlien van Rooyen’s chilling account of #VanRooyenFarmAttack

“He held the gun to my head and said, ‘Come here. Come here.’ and I went behind the pillar. There were still gunshots going off. Then the man with the gun turned around and told them to stop shooting,” said Karlien van Rooyen.

Adv Ludick asked Karlien who had told them to stop shooting and she pointed out Accused Number 4. Karlien later recalled that he had also asked her where the money was while he was pointing the gun at her. She had told him that it was in the shop.

Karlien continued to recount the events of the evening in question, stating that the man with the gun then looked past her to where Ronnie Lombard was standing with a shotgun. She hid behind a nearby sofa and heard another shot being fired. “I can’t remember how many…” she adds.

Accused Number 4 was gone when she returned to Billy who, once again pleaded with her to get him inside the house. She managed to pick him up under his arms and pull him into the house, closing the front door behind them.

She heard her father calling, and went to him. He told her that he was struggling with the shotgun and that he couldn’t shoot.

Billy then called her name and she turned to see him standing upright in front of the television. She caught him as he was about to fall and moved him to the second lounge, placing him on a chair.

Ronnie called her again and asked her where the guns were, referring to his own firearm, a 30-06 and Billy’s hunting rifle. She went to the room and retrieved the firearms.

She heard another noise and, upon her return, discovered that Billy had fallen from the chair. Kneeling in front of him, she recalls that she used her phone to call for help, first to alert Gluckstadt Police and then calling a friend. Then she noticed that Ronnie had disappeared.

Billy’s condition was deteriorating rapidly and he informed her that he couldn’t breathe. She lifted his arms and, when that didn’t work, he asked her to lift his legs.

While Karlien van Rooyen tried desperately to help her mortally wounded husband, the attack on the house continued, and she heard a gunshot nearby, followed by another noise that she described as sounding like a gunshot as well.

Looking up in the direction of the door, Karlien was faced with the devastating sight of her father’s blood in the doorway.

“Pa!” she screamed and ran to him.
