Landbou learners impress at the Royal Show

S. Bukhosini, N. Ngema, S. Buthelezi and Siya, students in training, in the Super Steer competition: 1st; 2nd; 3rd; and 4th place.

The staff and the learners of Landbou can do so much more. Except for the ‘normal’ things that are happening at school they can also groom cattle, feed them, tame them and compete with them. They do waste management, go for excursions, for example to NAMPO, the Bloodriver Silos and Vryheid Waste Salvage. We have received a nursery to grow seedlings, grow more vegetables and to help the community with vegetable gardens. We make our own compost and we breed our own sheep and cattle.

So it was with a proud heart that we send our ‘ossie’ team to the Royal Show in Pietermaritzburg on May 24. On Friday the steers were prepared for the show. On Saturday our learners proudly walked their steers into the ring filled with cattle and other teams from several agricultural institutions but there was an enormous difference between Landbou and the other teams.

This is the difference which makes Landbou’s participation an outstanding achievement. Landbou was the only training institution participating with their own bred cattle. Congratulations Mr Van der Schyff and thank you that you helped Landbou compete with integrity.

In the cross-breeding competition; 2nd place in the group of 3 animals, 1st, 2nd and 3rd place with the top spot for best animal on show. In the cattle-handling competition; Showmanship group: 1 stand 2nd place. Congratulations Team Vryheid – this is a phenomenal achievement. Thanks to all staff and sponsors who made this achievement possible. We are very grateful and proud to be Landbouers.

Three of our learners also made it through to the Northern Natal Countryside u/19 team and u/17 Northern Natal Rugby Team and the Northern Natal u/19 Netball team. Congratulations to Ndumiso Ngema, Sandile Mbuyisa and Nosipho Makhanya. You are stars.

At our last assembly for this we could hand out all the prizes being won, celebrate all the achievements and hand out almost 80 ambassador badges and say thank you to all our staff. We truly grow tall trees to greatness at Landbou. God is good.
